Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Many people may consider eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to remove and tighten excess eyelid skin because of baggy or droopy eyelids. What Happens During Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on upper eyelids, lower eyelids — or both at the same time.Incisions made in the upper and lower eyelids are placed in such a way that they leave no visible scars after the procedure. They are made in the natural folds of the eyelids, in the crease of the upper eyelid and in lower eyelid incision is taken on Conjunctiva of lower lid . This way, incisions are virtually unnoticeable after they have healed.The surgeon will make some markings while the patient is not lying down to point out the areas of excess skin and fat pads that need to be excised. Some underlying muscle also may be removed.Surgical instruments such as scalpels, surgical scissors, radio-frequency cutting devices and sometimes Carbon Dioxide lasers are used to carry out this excision. Sutures or tissue adhesives (glue) then are carefully applied to smoothen and recontour areas around the eyebrows and eyelids.During the procedure, the surgeon decides how much skin, muscle and/or fat needs to be removed, based on a preoperative evaluation of facial features such as your underlying facial muscles, bone structure and the symmetry of eyebrows.A carbon dioxide laser may later be used as finishing touches to resurface the skin and smoothen out any residual wrinkles in the eyelid and eyebrow areas.A brow lift may also be needed in some cases, to correct droopy eyebrows. This involves making incisions on the scalp and tightening the skin to lift the eyebrows.  

Recovery from Blepharoplasty

Following blepharoplasty, a topical antibiotic ointment will be applied. Eye patches rarely are necessary.On the first day, one must apply cold packs at every two to three hours, for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time. The ice helps reduce the swelling and keeps bruising to a minimum. After 48 hours, warm compresses must be started to promote healing.Your doctor will prescribe some pain killer medication, if needed. Most people need only three days prescription for pain relievers. Narcotics rarely are necessary.Expect mild discomfort during the immediate recovery period. But if pain is severe or vision changes occur, call your surgeon's office immediately.

The trichophytic brow lift involves placing incisions directly in the hairline in a wavy fashion. This helps camouflage them. Excess skin is cut from the non-hair-bearing portion of the forehead. The brows are elevated through the flap.  This technique provides long-lasting results but is not recommended in men who have a receding hairline, as this may eventually reveal the scar.

Recovery after Upper Facelift?
