Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Many people may consider eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) to remove and tighten excess eyelid skin because of baggy or droopy eyelids. This gives them a more alert, youthful appearance. This drooping tissue can sometimes cause reduced peripheral vision, especially the upward and outward fields of vision. Blepharoplasty, hence provides a less obstructed field of view, once these droopy eyelids are improved. Blepharoplasty involves removal of excess skin, muscle and sometimes fat from the upper, lower, or both eyelids. Some cases may require only skin removal and not muscle.  

What Is Cosmetic Blepharoplasty?

         Cosmetic blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that is carried out only to improve aesthetics. Blepharoplasty gives a younger, fresher appearance by correcting droopy, baggy eyelids. Drooping of eyelids unfortunately, is part of the aging process. The eyebrows may sag too. Bags appear under the eyes because the eyelid skin stretches, muscles weaken and the fat pockets become more prominent and bulge.This may be a hereditary condition.  Cosmetically, the face develops a more tired or older appearance.    

What Happens During Eyelid Surgery?

Blepharoplasty can be performed on upper eyelids, lower eyelids — or both at the same time. Incisions made in the upper and lower eyelids are placed in such a way that they leave no visible scars after the procedure. They are made in the natural folds of the eyelids, in the crease of the upper eyelid and in lower eyelid incision is taken on Conjunctiva of lower lid . This way, incisions are virtually unnoticeable after they have healed. The surgeon will make some markings while the patient is not lying down to point out the areas of excess skin and fat pads that need to be excised. Some underlying muscle also may be removed. Surgical instruments such as scalpels, surgical scissors, radio-frequency cutting devices and sometimes Carbon Dioxide lasers are used to carry out this excision. Sutures or tissue adhesives (glue) then are carefully applied to smoothen and recontour areas around the eyebrows and eyelids. During the procedure, the surgeon decides how much skin, muscle and/or fat needs to be removed, based on a preoperative evaluation of facial features such as your underlying facial muscles, bone structure and the symmetry of eyebrows. A carbon dioxide laser may later be used as finishing touches to resurface the skin and smoothen out any residual wrinkles in the eyelid and eyebrow areas. A brow lift may also be needed in some cases, to correct droopy eyebrows. This involves making incisions on the scalp and tightening the skin to lift the eyebrows.    

Recovery from Blepharoplasty

Following blepharoplasty, a topical antibiotic ointment will be applied. Eye patches rarely are necessary. On the first day, one must apply cold packs at every two to three hours, for about 10 to 15 minutes at a time. The ice helps reduce the swelling and keeps bruising to a minimum. After 48 hours, warm compresses must be started to promote healing. Your doctor will prescribe some pain killer medication, if needed. Most people need only three days prescription for pain relievers. Narcotics rarely are necessary. Expect mild discomfort during the immediate recovery period. But if pain is severe or vision changes occur, call your surgeon's office immediately.  

Can a brow lift make you look younger, better, or fresher?

A brow lift is a cosmetic procedure that corrects loose skin and other signs of aging around the eyes, brows and forehead. It repositions the eyebrows and underlying forehead tissues more superiorly to create a more firm, youthful appearance. A brow lift, when done correctly, can restore the youthful arch to your brow while also making the eyes look wider and reducing forehead wrinkles. There are several methods to elevate the eyebrows to a more attractive position, both surgically and non-surgically. Below is an explanation of each brow lift technique:  

Chemical Brow Lift :

BOTOX can be used to elevate the brows non-surgically. This procedure, though non-surgical has the drawback of having temporary results. Botox is injected in the muscles that depress the eyebrows, which allows the brows to lift by 1-2mm. This treatment option is chosen by those who don’t want to go under the knife. They however need the procedure repeatedly.

Temporal Brow Lift :

This technique involves making multiple small incisions in the temporal region of the forehead, most of which are hidden in the scalp. This approach involves less dissection than other surgical methods, but elevates only the outer portion of the brow. Older patients with deep forehead wrinkles who refuse to undergo a more extensive procedures, may benefit from this brow lift method.  


Trichophytic Brow Lift (hairline brow lift) :

The trichophytic brow lift involves placing incisions directly in the hairline in a wavy fashion. This helps camouflage them. Excess skin is cut from the non-hair-bearing portion of the forehead. The brows are elevated through the flap.  This technique provides long-lasting results but is not recommended in men who have a receding hairline, as this may eventually reveal the scar.

Recovery after Upper Facelift?

Usually it takes 7 to 10 days after surgery for healthy recovery. One can starts personal work in just 24 hours. Swelling is bad till three days after surgery. Gradually swelling goes down and on seventh day of surgery patient is absolutely fine. We give bandage only on incision like for 2 days than there is no bandages as well. It is important to complete the course of Anti-Biotic of five days, and PAIN killer is up to individual generally for first three days it is need after that most of the patient’s do not need any pain killer.  

Who are Ideal Candidates for Upper Face Lift?

Someone who is very regular with Botox for forehead wrinkle or droopy eyelids. Biggest advantage is , Upper face lift surgery is permanent best to done along with Upper eyelid blepharoplasty. No need to invest again and again in Botox.
